A while back we set December 17th for the pottery potluck holiday dinner and by now you should have received your invite via text message. If you did not, please let me know and I’ll double check your info. We hope that everyone can come to this dinner that celebrates us all as a group and a studio! This is a dinner to bring a friend, your partner, spouse, older kids … the more the merrier. We also ask that you bring a piece you have made wrapped and ready to gift. For those new to this exchange, we place all the wrapped gifts to the side and number them then the bowl of numbers to pick from goes around the table. If you brought something to the exchange you get to choose a number from the bowl, (if it happens to be your own, you get to pick again) and your gift to take home is whatever is wrapped up with the number you have chosen on it. There are no switching gifts or anything else like that, if you’re bringing a potter along for the dinner, have them contribute if they would like to!
Also, please bring a dish to share for dinner. We have lots of napkins, plates, cups, utensils, etc but if you’re bringing a dish which requires a bowl, please bring some along.
My house renovation is almost complete and I will be moving most of my studio space out to the farm, I will be keeping a smaller studio at the school but because my current space will be open and available, we are looking at the space to become the clay studio! The room is a little narrower but has more usable square footage because the kilns will not be moving. This will provide studio members with a space which has a sink and a window for natural light! It also means I will be able to bring all of the things I am currently storing in my house and garage which belong to the school over to the school. The current clay studio space will become much needed storage for the school. All the extra tables, chairs, easels, clay, materials, tools etc that are taking up space in the main room will now be housed in their own designated space.
The large shelves in the clay studio will be moved. This means we will need you to empty your shelf. Please box things up as soon as you can for this. You can leave your box of studio stuff at the school in the main room while the move happens. Please place these near the brown shelves to the left of the sink, but don’t put loose things on the shelves please. You will need to bring your own box(es) or bags etc for your things. Let’s try to keep this as tidy as possible please as the space is still used for other things these days! The large shelves are all connected to each other so we do need everyone to get their own things off of those in order to move them. If we have to move your things and something gets broken we will be sad but we won’t be able to do anything about it unfortunately. This is a good time if you have unfired work to get it finished and out for firing or reclaim or if you have lots of bisque on your shelf waiting to be glazed this is a great time to get your glazing done and on the shelf! Liz Blalock and I plan to do as much of this as possible on Monday and Tuesday December 2nd and 3rd. If you are available to help out, we would really appreciate your time!
I’ve been asked a couple of times about firing schedules. We will do at least one more bisque and glaze firing before the gift exchange on the 17th, more if there are more loads. I cannot guarantee we will be doing anything after this unless there is a full load out. The best way to be sure you get your work fired in time is to finish things up and get them on the shelf as soon as you can. We avoid firing damp pieces on the shelves but you may put them there to finish drying. If we need to fire them, we will hold the kiln at 180 degrees for several hours to dry pieces or we will pass the piece up and fire it in the next load if it is very thick or very wet. Remember, there will be no downtime with kilns when we switch the studio space since the kilns will be staying where they are! Yay!
Starting in January we hope to have a few small studios available to rent to craftsmen and artists. Help us get the word out if you can! These will not be for clay artists, all the clay work will remain in the clay studio to keep things as clean as we can but will be available for people working with textiles, wood, paints, etc and it would be a big help to get them filled.
Thanks for everything you do to help keep things running!
See you all in the studio and December 17th for dinner!
Sarah
